OLYMPIADA - CHALKIDIKI

THE AREA

welcome to

Olympiada Chalkidiki

a place full of history and natural beauty

The village of Olympiada is located on the eastern peninsula of Chalkidiki where wild mountains with rivers and waterfalls meet fabulous sandy beaches and crystal-clear seas.

The holiday homes are situated at the entrance to the village of Olympiada which lies beside the archaeological site of ancient Stageira, birthplace of Aristotle (the famous philosopher and tutor to Alexander the Great).

In the spring and summer, the mountains are abundant with wildflowers and herbs with the best oregano found growing on the sides of mountain footpaths which we gather and dry – delicious sprinkled on Greek salad and feta cheese.

The village makes its own Feta cheese from sheep and goats that graze the local fields. Out at sea, you may see dolphins playing or in the shallows, perhaps a curious octopus swimming.

The village boasts excellent tavernas serving all the Greek specialities and delicious seafood, including our famous local Olympiada mussels. The restaurants can be found all along the village beach-front promenade and on beaches further along the coast. Bakers, butchers and supermarkets are within a 5-minute walk, where you can buy everything you need if you feel like cooking or grilling at home.

If you are here at full moon, you can see the moon rising out of the ocean in front of Garden Residence, sometimes rising behind our island to the left or behind ancient Stageira to the right depending on the time of year. On a clear day, you can see the island of Thassos on the horizon.

MOUNT ATHOS

It has to be mentioned that we are en-route for male pilgrims visiting the Monastic State of Mount Athos, commonly known as the Holy Mountain. It is an important Center of Orthodox monasticism with 20 majestically perched monasteries.

Those wishing to enter Mount Athos must obtain permission from the Pilgrims office in Thessaloniki. The gateway to enter for pilgrims is by boat from Ierissos (36 kms from Garden Residence) and Ouranopolis (51 kms).

For those of us not able to personally visit Mount Athos there are daily cruises along the coastline where you can see the imposing beautifully restored monasteries nestled in dramatic scenery against the backdrop of the Athos mountain itself at over 2000 meters.

At the physical border of Mount Athos, 2 kms outside Ouranopolis is the ancient site of the Monastery Zygou, an old Athonite monastery, excavation and restoration works still in progress but open for exploring by all.
